“How to Train Your Dragon” soared at the box office this weekend, showing that some remakes still pack a punch.
The Universal live-action adaptation of the popular animated series debuted with an impressive $83.7 million in North American theaters, according to Comscore estimates released Sunday. Directed by franchise veteran Dean DeBlois, the film tells the story of the unlikely bond between a young Viking named Hiccup (played by Mason Thames) and his dragon, Toothless.
This reboot easily surpassed the $55 million opening of 2019’s animated “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.” Internationally, the film has already earned over $114.1 million, pushing its global total to nearly $198 million.
Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, remarked, “This is another clear example of a live-action remake fulfilling the high expectations set by its marketing. The enduring appeal and repeat viewing potential of these films, especially in the summer, has been truly remarkable.”
