Irish-language rap group Kneecap delivered a passionate performance to tens of thousands of fans on Saturday at the Glastonbury Festival, despite facing criticism from British politicians and a terror charge against one of the trio.
Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, known on stage as Mo Chara, has been charged under the Terrorism Act for allegedly supporting a proscribed organization after reportedly waving a Hezbollah flag at a London concert last November. The rapper, charged under the anglicized name Liam O’Hanna, is currently out on unconditional bail pending a further court hearing scheduled for August.
“Glastonbury, I’m a free man!” Ó hAnnaidh exclaimed as Kneecap took the stage at Glastonbury’s West Holts field, which can hold around 30,000 people. Dozens of Palestinian flags waved among the packed crowd as the performance began with an audio montage featuring news clips highlighting the band’s critics and legal challenges.
