Legendary horse trainer D. Wayne Lukas, known for winning 15 Triple Crown races, has died at the age of 89.

D. Wayne Lukas, a Hall of Fame trainer and one of the most celebrated figures in horse racing history, has passed away at the age of 89. A transformative presence in the sport for decades, Lukas was widely regarded as both a masterful trainer and a symbol of excellence in the industry.

His family confirmed on Sunday that he died Saturday night at his home in Louisville, Kentucky. Lukas had been battling a severe MRSA bloodstream infection, which caused extensive harm to his heart and digestive system, exacerbating several chronic health issues.

“Wayne dedicated his life not just to training horses, but to uplifting the entire sport — mentoring generations of horsemen and women, and welcoming countless fans into the magic of racing,” the family said in a statement. “Whether proudly touting a young horse as the next Derby champion or quietly offering wisdom before a big race, Wayne embodied passion, dignity, and resilience. He spent his final days in Kentucky, surrounded by faith, family, and the peace he chose.”
