Elon Musk announced the creation of a new political movement, the America Party, following a public rift with President Donald Trump over the administration’s sweeping tax cut legislation.
Once a prominent supporter of Trump and head of the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency, Musk distanced himself from the president after the controversial bill was signed into law on Friday.
During the bill’s progression through Congress, Musk warned that he would establish a new political party if the “reckless spending package” was approved.
“We’re living under a single-party system when it comes to wasting taxpayer money through corruption and inefficiency,” Musk said Saturday on X, the social platform he owns. “That ends now — the America Party has been created to restore your freedoms.”
When asked about Musk’s move on Sunday before leaving his New Jersey residence for Washington, Trump dismissed the idea as “ridiculous,” and praised the Republican Party’s continued success.
“The Democrats are lost, sure, but our system has always worked as a two-party model,” Trump said. “A third party only creates chaos. They’ve never succeeded — and they won’t now.”
