The Dodgers have announced that Shohei Ohtani is scheduled to take the mound Monday night against the Padres.

Shohei Ohtani is set to make his return to the mound as the starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night against the San Diego Padres—marking his first game appearance as a pitcher since undergoing elbow surgery 21 months ago.

The Dodgers announced the plan following their 5-4 victory over the Giants on Sunday night. Ohtani is expected to serve as an opener, likely pitching an inning or two, as the NL West-leading Dodgers begin a four-game home series against San Diego.

“Shohei’s getting eager, which is a great sign for us,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts before the official announcement. “Whether it’s one or two innings, my guess is he’ll probably start with one. He’s ready to go. Simulated games have run their course—he’s prepared for his debut.”

Ohtani last pitched on August 23, 2023, in a game for the Angels against the Reds, where he sustained the injury. He previously underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018 and had another elbow procedure on September 19, 2023.
