What’s operating and what’s shut on the Fourth of July

Independence Day, celebrated on July 4th, marks the anniversary of the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopting the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

One year later, the Library of Congress notes, the first spontaneous celebration took place in Philadelphia. However, it wasn’t until after the War of 1812 that annual observances became more widespread. Congress officially recognized the holiday much later, declaring it a federal holiday on June 28, 1870.

Here’s a look at what’s open and closed for this year’s Fourth of July holiday:

Government Services
Federal and local government offices — including post offices, courthouses, and public schools — will be closed.

Banks and Financial Markets
Banks and U.S. stock markets will be closed on Friday. FedEx and UPS will suspend most of their pickup and delivery services for the day.

Retail Stores
Costco will be closed on the Fourth of July. However, most other major chains, including Walmart and Target, plan to remain open — many with holiday sales. Grocery stores will largely be open as well, though hours may vary, so it’s a good idea to check with your local store.
