After Being Robbed Earlier, Bellinger Belts 3 Homers in Yankees’ Blowout Win Over Cubs
Cody Bellinger wasn’t sure his third home run would count after being denied one an inning earlier.
“I didn’t know at first,” he said. “It felt great to see that third one finally clear the fence.”
Bellinger crushed three two-run home runs against his former team, the Chicago Cubs, and came close to a fourth before being robbed by a leaping catch. His offensive explosion powered the Yankees to an 11-0 rout on Friday night.
Aaron Judge also shined on defense, making three standout plays in right field as the Yankees extended their winning streak to five games, bouncing back from a six-game skid.
Bellinger, a two-time All-Star and 2019 NL MVP, is the son of former Yankee Clay Bellinger. After two seasons with the Cubs, where he hit .266 with 18 home runs and 78 RBIs in 130 games last year, he was traded to New York in December. The Cubs sent him along with $5 million to help cover the $52.5 million left on his contract.
He launched homers in the third and fifth innings off Chris Flexen and Caleb Thielbar, respectively, for his 18th career multi-homer game. In the seventh, he nearly added a fourth, but Kyle Tucker made a spectacular catch at the wall to take it away.
